Social Bookmarking or Highway to Backlinks
It is important for a blog (site) to get more links. Your website gets more popular in the eyes of search engines if many other sites link to you. More links also means more exposure for your site hence more visitors.
Social bookmarking is an important step of the whole process of marketing your website. However, it is often overlooked by many site owners.
So what exactly is Social Bookmarking? Here is the definition from wikipedia:
“In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.”
More and more Internet users visit Bookmarking sites such as StumbleUpon, Digg and many others. This means that every time you submit a link to one of these sites, you reach thousands of potential visitors. Also, you get a link to your site which increases your ranking in the search engines such as Google.
Now, social bookmarking might take up lots of your time. Right? Well, there is an easier way to do things; SocialMarker.com! Visit this site and on the right side you will see over 40 bookmarking sites. You need to visit each site listed and create a free account (try to use the same username and password for all of them, it will make your life easier). It will take an hour or two – but you do it only once. Once you are done, go back to SocialMarker and fill in the information about a page you want to add; Title, URL, description and keywords – then click on Submit. In another 30 minutes or so, your site will be submitted to all these directories – giving you backlinks and visitors.
Repeat this step EVERY time after writing a new post to your blog or adding a new page to your site.

Thanks for interesting post.
I know about SocialMarker, but is it actually as easy as you are saying with submitting urls to them?
Sometimes, it doesn’t submit automatically, but opens the “Submit Page” of a social bookmarking website, and then you need to fill in the details manually.
Does that happen to you sometimes?
Hey, Steven! It does happen to me. That’s why I said it takes about 30 minutes to submit…
It seems to me that a few of those sites do not retain your login and passwords… a few others work using a different system (so you actually have to hit SUBMIT and fill in the info manually)
But all in all it save a good 2 hours
(if you had to open up each site, log in every time, rewrite everything…)

Good post. I also use Social Marker, in fact I blogged about it myself just the other day. As Steven points out above, it’s not entirely automatic but that’s a GOOD thing because you are doing proper human submissions, not bulk automated submissions.
Only thing I would say is personally I wouldn’t suggest submitted every single post. Just submit your best content and you’ll build a better profile. Social media is all about relationships and building a profile. If people see you posting loads of junk (not saying and of the visitors here would actually post junk, but nobody creates 100% pure genius conten every day!) they will stop visiting your submissions. Just post your best stuff though, and perticipate in the community, you’ll build a strong profile, and people will be eager to see what you have posted!

Hi ales very good and interesting post. I too know about socialmarker but one thing i want to know is how to bookmark again and again the same url because it will be a scam right? I mean if i bookmark my blog or site first time then how to bookmark it again could you help me on this alex?

Hey, Syed!
You cannot bookmark the same URL more than once… This is why you need to bookmark posts (if it’s a blog) or new pages (if it’s a site).
As you can notice, each of my posts has it’s own link – this is how I bookmark!

Regarding Social Bookmarking, if you ONLY submit your content aren’t you likely to get your account banned for “spamming”? I read about it in this post here:

Todd recommends that in order to stay under the radar, it’s always a good idea to also bookmark other peoples’ contents.

Hi Alex,
Do i need to submit all the 6 blogs/pages post or only the landing page. In my case, I am pointing my 6 keyword phrases to my main blog site.
