EPP 115: Refine Your Email Marketing Strategy With An Autoresponder

In this week’s episode of the Extra Paycheck Podcast we’re talking about using an autoresponder and blast emails for your email marketing.

Also available on: iTunes | Stitcher | Tunein | Google Play

In this episode I am answering a question by Jeff from Middle Class Dad, a listener of this very podcast. Jeff asks:

“How many emails do you have in your autoresponder sequence and when you send an email outside of that automated sequence, what is the best way to ensure you’re not sending that email at the same time as autoresponder emails?”

I’d like to explain this question in more detail to those who are very new to online marketing and especially email marketing. An autoresponder helps you automatically send a series of pre-written email messages to your email subscribers. You can certainly send these emails manually if you have a few people on your list however as you get into dozens, hundreds and thousands of subscribers you simply wouldn’t be able to to that. You won’t be able to keep track of everything and everyone. An autoresponder is a great tool to do that task for you. You write the emails once and whenever a new subscriber is added to your email list they’ll start receiving these emails.

At this very moment I have only 11 emails in that sequence. However I add new emails from time to time when I publish a very interesting or extremely helpful piece of content that I think my subscribers will see a lot of value in. If you are just staring with email marketing, don’t worry about not having “enough” messages for your sequence. It will certainly grow with time.

The second part of the question is about “email blasts”. These are one-time messages that we send to our subscribers on a very specific date or occasion. These emails are great for sharing news, launchign a new product or simply sharing a great deal that is running right now.

However, the problem with email blasts is that they could feel “spammy”, especially to new subscribers. If someone just signed up to your newsletter and they get a sales email from you on the very first day – there is a chance they will report that email as spam (which is bad for many different reasons). There are steps you can take to prevent that. These steps will vary from one autoresponder provider to another. Since I am currently using MailChimp, I found these options to be very easy to set-up. I make sure my new subscribers do NOT receive any of my blast emails unless they’ve been through my first 5 automated emails.

There are other details and tips that I share in this shop so scroll up and press the PLAY button to hear the full episode.
