When it comes to websites, the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) plays a big role. You might have the coolest website online but if people aren’t finding that website than it’s useless. Proper SEO helps our website get better search engine rankings, more visitor and potentially more income. That’s the main point of our business, isn’t it?

Search engines such as Google do not reveal how their algorithms work and how exactly websites get ranked. However, there are certain proven things that help us get better rankings. The design of the website, the speed at which the website loads, the keyword and content we use and many other factors. Although these factors change from time to time and some of them become less (or more) important, the main idea behind SEO strategies remains the same.

Over the years I have tried very different approaches to SEO and some things have proven to work time and time again. In this episode of the Extra Paycheck Podcast I am sharing strategies that help me get better rankings from my website. Most of my traffic is free and comes from search engines so SEO plays en important role for my online business.

  1. What are your thoughts on starting a website that isn’t really defined to one niche? Im beginning to understand that may not do well for trying to rank higher on google because google will see various topics on your site which i guess isn’t really geared towards anything specific. For example my site Sbrbnlifestyles.com. What are some tips for trying to rank multi-niche site or should i start with one niche and grow?

    1. J, what you’re talking about is an authority website and not a niche website – although it still must have some kind of a theme.
The big issue with authority sites is that growing them takes a lot longer than growing a niche website. This includes rankings, making an income and getting visitors.
A niche website could start seeing success within a few months where an authority website will usually take years.

  2. Great podcast as always Alex! Getting back to basics never hurts even for so-called “pros”. Thanks for sharing your long-term & actionable experience.

Quick question: what maximum number of outgoing links would you recommend for a blog post? Without removing them, is it really useful to change them to rel=”nofollow”?

    Cheers!

    1. Thanks Ambroise!

To answer your first question, I personally wouldn’t count the number of outgoing links. I don’t think there is a “proper number”. If the link makes sense – add it 😉
I don’t really do the rel=”nofollow”? within the posts (maybe I should), I do it from a sitewide links. For example if in the footer of the site I had a link pointing to another site I would do a nofollow.
